The Taming of the Shrew is the initial production in The Theatre Project's Fifth Anniversary Season. The Theatre Project and TP&co are New York City based theatre companies, and two branches of the same organization. The Theatre Project explores modern and experimental works within new play development, while TP&co takes a more traditional approach, specializing in classic theatre pieces. Although their fields of focus differ, both are bound by the shared values of a high quality holistic approach from design through to execution, and favor fine detail and artist-driven collaboration. These values informed the development of Shakespeare Off-Broadway.
Through Shakespeare Off-Broadway, The Theatre Project and TP&co maintain a commitment to continuously offer evocative, affordable productions of William Shakespeare's classic plays in an ongoing format. Through innovative productions inspired by the traditions of London's Globe and Burbage's The Theatre, with the intent of establishing the age-old celebration of The Bard's classic plays on the Off-Broadway stage.
Shakespeare's classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew pits the spirited Katherine against the fortune-seeking Petruchio, who has agreed to woo and marry her as a favor to his old friend Hortensio, who is in love with Bianca, Katherine's younger, more beautiful and more popular sister. The younger sister can only be married after the older one, but Katherine has a notorious temper and thus far no man will have her ... until Petruchio comes along to "tame" her. Through a series of hilarious hi-jinks, Katherine is made to bend to her new husband's will and she reappears before her disbelieving family transformed into a new woman. It's a hysterical "battle of the sexes" that only Shakespeare could create!
