The Off-Broadway musical THE SPHINX WINX, a musical comedy misinterpretation of the classic love triangle between Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony, will play its final performance at Theatre Row's Beckett Theatre (410 West 42nd Street) in Manhattan on Sunday, June 19, it has been announced by the show's producers Tifft Productions.
An original cast recording of THE SPHINX WINX is in the planning stages, as are publishing and distribution negotiations.
When it opened officially Off-Broadway on May 18, the Associated Press heralded THE SPHINX WINX as a "campy, lighthearted production," full of "homespun charm," and "broadly comical." TheaterMania.com said it "will make adults smile and please young audiences even more," and that it was "witty and clever," and that "the entire cast is blessed with comedic talent." NYTheatre.com called THE SPHINX WINX a "delightful new musical," with "good catchy tunes," and that it was "clever and laugh out loud funny." Stagezine.com said that it "definitely delivers the comic goods." And TheatreIsEasy.com called it "an energetic, screwball parody that makes for an evening of pure joy and refreshing entertainment," and that "the audience is in for a treat."
With Book & Lyrics by Philip Capice, Anne Hitchner, and Robert Keuch; and Music by Kenneth Hitchner Jr., THE SPHINX WINX is a musical-comedy misinterpretation of ancient Egyptian history starring Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and
Marc Antony. With the kingdom of Egypt horribly in arrears to the Roman government due to Caesar's frivolous spending on lavish gifts for his Queen of the Nile,
Marc Antony arrives to uncover the cause and mete out justice. When the court's Soothsayer mistakenly forecasts that Antony will fall in love with Cleopatra, he unwittingly sets into motion a series of comic events the likes of which won't be found in any history books.
