On August 31st, Ruthless Nightingale Theater Company will open its production of In the Spotlight at the Loft at the Davenport Theatre. This will be the New York premiere of the play, and it will run from August 31st to September 2nd.
In the Spotlight, written by Co-Artistic Director Lindsey Ruzza, is a play inspired by the events leading up to the closing of the Profiles Theatre in Chicago. Maya finds herself in a new city where she lands an exciting job in a respected theatre, but she senses that there is something off. She strikes up an unlikely friendship with Violet, an actress who has been working with the theatre for her entire adult life. When it is revealed that Grant, Violet's costar and former life partner, is ignoring stage combat onstage, Maya and Violet navigate the uncharted territory of the complications of abuse in a non-Equity theatre setting. The play asks and answers questions about how we hold perpetrators accountable, how we move on, and how we reclaim our power.
With the #timesup and #metoo movement in full swing, this play is an informative look at abuse in an important but atypical setting. The arts have often boasted an inclusive community where the "misfits" are accepted, but the tragic reality is that theatre has a long way to go in creating a safe space for all. In the Spotlight is a piece that exposes an important issue in a creative way and contributes to the essential national conversation engaging these topics.
Ruthless Nightingale Theater Company strives to tell bold, important, and timely stories that represent a diverse range of people and experiences. We believe in the power of new work and modern voices- highlighting narratives historically excluded from the forefront of the conversation. Because Ruthless Nightingale believes that every voice is important, we create an environment where all our collaborators can contribute equally to the process of developing new work. Through the use of intimate space, we strive to immerse our audiences in both familiar and unfamiliar worlds with the hope that they leave with something unexpected.
