Roy Arias Studios & Theatres, located in the Times Square Arts Center (300 West 43rd Street) right in the heart of Times Square, announces its winter performance schedule for December and January.
Tomorrow, December 5th, Roy Arias Studios & Theatres (RAST) will present a free reading of Foreign Concept, a new play by Herb Donaldson. Foreign Concept revolves around an actor and a comedian in search of the American Dream, both finding themselves trapped in an all too common nightmare.
Donaldson will also serve as director for the reading. The performance begins at 8pm.
On Friday, December 19th, RAST will be hosting An American Holiday Evening, which will be comprised of staged presentations of select holiday tales from well-known authors. The featured "tales" are Revolt of the Evil Fairies by Ted Poston, The Christmas Tree and a Wedding by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and an except from Just Above My Head by James Baldwin. There will also be holiday beverages served after the show.
The show begins at 8pm; the suggested donation is $15.
In January of 2009, RAST will be presenting a special event on January 17th titled MEC in Manhattan. The evening will showcase the works of students from Medgar Evers College (MEC, one of the branches of the City University of New York, CUNY). The students will be performing staged readings of their own personal narratives in response to the recent Presidential election. Their works "revisit the historic night of November 4th, when the hour of 11pm came to signal the beginning of a revived nation." The performance begins at 8pm; the suggested donation is $5 for student and $10 for adults.
Also in the month of January, RAST will be presenting two new plays, Leave it in La Ropa (by Rosebud Ben-Oni) and Release Note (by Joe Thristino). All performances will begin at 8pm, and tickets are $10.
Leave it in La Ropa, which will be performed on January 23rd and 24th, is the story of Faustino, a self-described punk who returns home to the Rio Grande Valley, only to find that his father Cesar has illegally taken in a woman from Mexico. Faustino, with his father, soon discover the ultimate act of rebellion, and what it means for them and their community.
Release Note, which will be performed on January 30th and 31st, concerns a once prominent artist, now on the decline, who hires a young man to write a simple letter for him. When things fail to go as planned, the letter quickly becomes a lesson of how one should always read "the fine print."
All performances take place at Roy Arias Studios & Theatre at the Times Square Arts Center (300 West 43rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues). For additional performance information, call 347-273-1536.
