The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) announced today that Director of Special Projects Maria Goyanes will assume the position of Associate Producer, effective September 1, 2010. Goyanes has been on staff at The Public since 2004 and was instrumental in launching the theater's successful Public LAB series.

"For the last seven years at The Public, Maria Goyanes has proven herself a tireless worker, a brilliant and detail oriented producer, and a champion of a wide variety of theater artists," said Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. "She has not worked exclusively at The Public; her work at 13P is only the most visible of her outside activities in the downtown theater community. She understands The Public Theater in her bones, both how we work and, more importantly, what we stand for. She richly deserves this promotion, and I am looking forward to our partnership continuing for many years to come."

"It is a special pleasure for me to have worked with Maria since she was a student of mine at Brown University," Eustis continued. "From Brown, she came to work at Trinity Rep, where I was artistic director, and she then preceded me to The Public by two years. I have watched this extraordinary young woman grow into a real leader in our field. It is a good sign when the American Theater can attract, develop and retain idealistic and talented producers such as Maria."

"I am honored to work at an organization with the ideals and legacy of The Public Theater and to work with Oskar Eustis, Andy Hamingson and one of the greatest staffs of the American theater," said Director of Special Projects Maria Goyanes. "I look forward to continuing to bring important and challenging work to New York audiences and launching new initiatives like Public LAB that nurture and embrace artists."

Maria Goyanes is currently the theater's Director of Special Projects where she has worked on the development and cultivation of new plays and initiatives that support the work of a wide range of artists. She helped launch the theater's successful Public LAB, a series now in its fourth year that brings productions in development to audiences for only $10, working with Adrienne Kennedy, The Civilians, Naomi Wallace, Suzan- Lori Parks, Roger Guenveur Smith, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and many others. Both The Good Negro by Tracey Scott Wilson and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson by Alex Timbers and Michael Friedman transferred to The Public's mainstage subscription season after successful runs in Public LAB. She spearheaded the Suzan-Lori Parks' yearlong "365 Days/365 Plays" festival for New York City, working with 70 theater companies and over a thousand artists. She is also the Executive Producer of the OBIE Award-winning 13P (13 Playwrights, Inc.), a 13 play project founded with a collective of writers that includes Sarah Ruhl, Young Jean Lee, Anne Washburn, Lucy Thurber, and Sheila Callaghan. She is the recipient of the Josephine Abady Award from the League of Professional Theatre Women and was previously the Associate Producer at Trinity Repertory Company under Oskar Eustis.

The Public Theatre (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Andrew D. Hamingson, Executive Director) was founded by Joseph Papp in 1954 and is now one of the nation's preeminent cultural institutions, producing new plays, musicals, and productions of classics at its downtown headquarters and at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Public's mandate to create a theater for all New Yorkers continues to this day onstage and through extensive outreach and education programs. Each year, over 250,000 people attend Public Theater-related productions and events at six downtown stages, including Joe's Pub, and Shakespeare in the Park. The Public has won 42 Tony Awards, 151 Obies, 41 Drama Desk Awards and four Pulitzer Prizes. The Public has brought 52 shows to Broadway, including Sticks and Bones; That Championship Season; A Chorus Line; The Pirates of Penzance; The Tempest; Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk; On the Town; The Ride Down Mt. Morgan; Topdog/Underdog; Elaine Stritch at Liberty; Take Me Out; Caroline, or Change; Well; Passing Strange; and, most recently, the current Tony Award-winning revival of Hair. www.publictheater.org.
