American Morning is an original musical that examines the modern-day immigrant experience from the point of view of two Chinese immigrant cab drivers in New York City: Chin and Eng share a taxi medallion, a homeland, and the American Dream. While Eng slowly climbs the ladder of success by day, Chin falls short by night, and their partnership spirals towards a single, desperate act. When so much ties the two together, what drives them apart?
American Morning (previously titled Costs of Living) was the recipient of a 2016 Richard Rodgers Award, a 2015 B-Side Theatricals New American Musical Award, and an official selection of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Works in 2015. It was developed at the New York Theatre Barn, and the 2016 Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals. The show was a selection of the ASCAP Musical Theater workshop in 2011, as well as the Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop's 2012 Master Class, moderated by Stephen Sondheim.
American Morning was inspired by a 2009 New York Times article written by Corey Kilgannon and was later featured in the NYT City Room Blog.
