In 2012, THEATRE UNCUT asked playwrights from Greece, Syria, Spain, the US, Iceland and the UK to pen short dramatic responses to the political and economic challenges facing their own countries. These plays premiered at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. THEATRE UNCUT in New York features the NY premieres of a selection of these plays that look at how the everyday person deals with the state of global capitalism, the effects of austerity, the Eurozone Crisis and the Occupy movement. Audiences are invited to join in a dialogue about the issues raised by the plays at the end of each performance.

The THEATRE UNCUT plays coming to NY are:

In the Beginning by Neil LaBute (US), directed by Emily Reutinger
As Occupy movements spring up across the globe, one of America's leading playwrights questions our passion for holding on to what we believe in.

The Price by Lena Kitsopoulou (Greece), directed by CressIda Brown
A searing Greek comedy set in a world of extreme austerity where absolutely everything has its price.

The Breakout by Anders Lustgarten (UK), directed by Emily Reutinger
A brick falls out of a cell wall offering the inmates a view of the great advantages of being on the outside...

The Birth of My Violence by Marco Canale (Spain), directed by CressIda Brown
A meditation on theatre's relationship to the burning passion that drives an act of protest

Spine by Clara Brennan (UK), directed by CressIda Brown
As cuts force the closure of libraries across the UK, one playwright considers the high cost for future generations.

THEATRE UNCUT is a UK based activist theater group that was established in 2011 to encourage people to think, talk and take action on injustices that they see happening in the world around them. The company asked leading playwrights to write short plays that are then made available for anyone to perform anywhere rights free (for a limited period) to create mass events of international theatrical action. 2011 saw 87 simultaneous performances of plays written in response to the UK cuts in public spending happening simultaneously across the UK, USA, Germany and Ireland. In 2012, over 200 people downloaded the plays in 17 countries across 4 continents. Performances were held all over the world as far flung as South Africa, the Czech Republic, Egypt and all across the UK and USA.
