The cast and band of Off-Broadway's Walmartopia recently hit the recording studio to lay down tracks for the show's original cast recording. The recording will be produced by Walmartopia's musical director, August Eriksmoen, and will be released December 1st, just in time for the holidays.
This irreverent political satire of big business and eternal smiley faces is written by Catherine Capellaro (Book) and Andrew Rohn (Music and Lyrics). Mr. Rohn's tuneful and eclectic score incorporates pop, rhumba, marches, anthems and power ballads, set against a book that is campy and caustic and, well, as timely as today's headlines. Performances began August 23rd and Walmartopia officially opened, appropriately, on Labor Day, September 3rd.
"Walmartopia tells the hilarious and timely tale of Vicki Latrell, a single mom and Wal-Mart employee who speaks out against her company's working conditions and finds herself and her young daughter jettisoned to 2036, into a future where Wal-Mart dominates the entire world," explain press notes.
Directed by Daniel Goldstein and with choreography by Wendy Seyb and music direction by August Eriksmoen, the cast features Cheryl Freeman and Nikki M. James as mother and daughter (and Wal-Mart employees) at the center of this lampoon of the corporate giant. The cast also features Sarah Bolt, Charl Brown, Jessica L. Cope, Bradley Dean, Stephen DeRosa, Tanesha Gary, John Jellison, Neal Mayer, DeMond Nason, Andrew Polk, Pearl Sun, Scotty Watson, and Heléne Yorke.
Walmartopia plays the following performance schedule: Tuesdays through Saturdays 8PM, Sundays 7PM, with matinees on Saturdays & Sundays at 3PM. Tickets are priced at $65 & $45, and may be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (212) 307-4100. www.walmartopia.com
