Pop singer/songwriter Brielle Von Hugel stopped by to visit the cast of The York Theatre Company production of the new musical Unexpected Joy, with book and lyrics by Bill Russell (Side Show) and music by Janet Hood (Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens with Bill Russell). Ms. Von Hugel recently released a digital pop cover version of "When Will I Have My Own," a song from the show, now available online by visiting: www.briellevonhugel.com.

Brielle Von Hugel is a young, passionate, driven recording artist born and raised in Staten Island. Her dynamic, soulful, emotive voice and personality can be described as modern-day vintage. This singer/songwriter mixes pop-edge with yesterday's bluesy, smoky tones to give her musical storytelling grit-unapologetically honest and straightforward-commanding her audience to not just listen-but to feel. Brielle brings refreshment back into pop music, where her singing takes center stage underlining her reputation among her contemporaries as a voice to be reckoned with. Her powerful pipes have garnered her multiple television and press appearances, on Fox's "Good Day New York," "Industry Magazine," and various fundraisers including the March of Dimes, the TEAL Walk, and the Steven Siller Foundation. At age 16, Brielle was one of the Top 12 girls' semi-finalists on Season 11 of "American Idol."

Unexpected Joy, directed by Amy Anders Corcoran (Associate Director, Escape to Margaritaville), and with music direction by Beth Falcone (Les Misérables), featuring an all-female cast that includes Courtney Balan (Falsettos) as Rachel, Allyson Kaye Daniel (Sistas: The Musical) as Lou, Luba Mason (Pretty Filthy) as Joy,and Celeste Rose (Sister Act) as Tamara, is presented in association with Jim Kierstead, Aria Entertainment, Gabby Hanna & Marcy Feller, Riki Kane Larimer,Linda & Craig Wielkotz, Drew Desky & Dane Levens/Michael Mills, William Fernandez/Behzad Dabu. Performances began April 24, 2018 for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2018 at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).

Unexpected Joy is the story of three generations of female singers, long-held family tensions and a week together where change is in the air. In modern day Cape Cod, Joy, a baby boomer and proud hippie, is holding a memorial concert for the other half of her popular musical duo, Jump & Joy. When her conservative daughter and her rebellious granddaughter arrive from Oklahoma, the sparks fly as one family seeks to find the common ground in their different values, dreams and goals.

Unexpected Joy tackles tolerance, family ties, and the battles we fight to create our own identity. This new musical is a heartfelt and hilarious story that weaves folk-rock, pop, and blues in uniting a family that hasn't experienced true joy together for decades.

The Off-Broadway cast recording of Unexpected Joy will be released by JAY Records.
