In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). Anjali has a government-issued job as the madam to a sex robot. When Ven, the maintenance man, finds the robot exhibiting unusual and illegal human-like behavior, the pair strike up an uneasy black market partnership; she expands her robot's human-like repertoire of behaviors and he brings in the high-paying clientele. But when the clients start asking for more, and want to pay more, Anjali must decide just how far she's willing to go.
Emilie Collyer's darkly funny and disturbing sci-fi play was called a "post cyber punk Gertrude Stein" by Theatre Alive at its Melbourne Fringe Festival premiere.
The cast features Giacomo Baessato ("Wayward Pines," "The Returned") and Leah Gabriel (Othello and King Lear for Titan Theater Co).
The design team includes Dan Daly (scenic design); Zach Blane (lighting design); and Julian Evans (sound design). The dramaturg is Bridget Balodis. The production stage manager is Philip Louis Calabro.
