In 2018, Joe's Pub at The Public launched a new program The Vanguard Residency. The inaugural recipient of the award is Grammy-nominated, art and funk rock pioneer Nona Hendryx. She will use the series to present artists and work that are "antithetical to the normal,expected and accepted, the status quo." The year under Hendryx's distinctive curatorial guidance will also include long beloved shows like MAMAFUNK but also new shows like BERKLEE on BROADWAY, a showcase of Berklee students who take part in a spring break three-day trip to New York, immersed in Musical Theater & Cabaret Workshops, panels and performances.
Nona Hendryx (Creator/Director) will premiere her "PARALLEL LIVES" featuring an international roster of contemporary vocalists, is a global celebration of "Lady Day" (Billie Holiday) and the "Little Sparrow" (Edith Piaf). Two women born in the same year on different shores, speaking different languages, led paraell lives in manyways, yet never met or maybe they did, no one knows. They died 4 years apart in the cities they loved.
