New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) is proud to announce the Community Choir Program, as part of the upcoming New York premiere of THE EVENTS, written by acclaimed Scottish playwright David Greig.
THE EVENTS follows one survivor's search for compassion, peace and understanding in the wake of unthinkable violence. Delving into religion, faith, politics and reason, Ramin Gray's theatrically inventive production features a soaring soundtrack and a different community choir at each performance.
With seven different choirs featured each week, the Community Choir Program is a daring and ambitious project, with each choir playing an integral and unique part of the storytelling. Over the seven week run, THE EVENTS will showcase over 45 choirs (nearly 1,200 singers) from the tri-state area, with a different choir each night onstage at New York Theatre Workshop.
NYTW is seeking adult choirs (age 18 and up) of 20-40 members, or larger choirs split into smaller groups, to volunteer to perform in the show. Prior to performing onstage with the award-winning company of actors, each choir will be asked to learn a small selection of music and attend two preparatory rehearsals. The Actors Touring Company production of David Greig's internationally acclaimed play THE EVENTS comes to New York for a strictly limited engagement in February and March, 2015.
The next production of NYTW's 2014/2015 season is THE INVISIBLE HAND, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar (Disgraced, The Who & The What) directed by Obie Award winner Ken Rus Schmoll (Red Dog Howls), and starring Jameal Ali (Hunted), Usman Ally (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity), Dariush Kashani (The Happiest Song Plays Last), and Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk (Showtime's "Weeds"). Performances begin on November 19, 2014, with tickets are on sale now at www.nytw.org or 212-279-4200.
As previously announced, New York Theatre Workshop's 2014/15 season will also include the New York premiere of THE EVENTS, written by David Greig and directed by Ramin Gray; and the New York premiere of FOREVER, written and performed by Dael Orlandersmith and directed by Neel Keller.
