Actress Anna Chlumsky will join the cast of Mint Theater Company's SO HELP ME GOD! Chlumsky joins Kristen Johnston for the Off-Broadway run, which will begin previews November 18th. The production will open officially at the Lucile Lortel Theatre Dec. 7 and run through Dec. 20.
In SO HELP ME GOD, Johnston plays a demanding leading actress, with Chlumsky as her ingénue understudy with endeavors to take her place. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Martin Platt will direct the production, which is written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins is the late playwright of Chicago (the basis for the Kander and Ebb musical). His additional screenplays include "Libeled Lady" and "Roxie Hart."
Last summer, Johnston headlined a reading of So Help Me God! at the Lortel.
Anna Chlumsky is best-known for playing Vada Sultenfuss in the 1991 movie My Girl and the 1994 sequel My Girl 2. Chlumsky starred in the 2008 Off-Broadway production of Unconditional by Brett C. Leonard at The Public Theater, produced by Philip Seymour Hoffman's LAByrinth Theater Company.
Kristen Johnston is most famous for her role as Sally Solomon in the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun. Johnston made her professional stage debut with New York's Atlantic Theater Company, where she appeared in such productions as As You Like It, Girl's Talk, Stage Door, Author's Voice, Portrait of a Woman, and RoseMary For Remembrance. In addition to her stage and film career, she also teaches at the Atlantic Acting School in NYC.
So Help Me God! circled New York in October of 1929 but did not land on Broadway, thanks in no small part to the Stock Market Crash. The comedy tried out out-of-town on the Subway Circuit including Werba's Flatbush Theater and the Boulevard Theater in Queens.
