The Drama Desk and Obie Award-winning Asian-American Off-Broadway Ma-Yi Theater Company will present the World Premiere of PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band, a new rock musical by Michi Barall, with music by Paul Lieber and Matt Park.
The production, featuring a multicultural cast of seven actor-musicians, is a Ma-Yi Theater-commissioned work, directed and originally conceived by Jack Tamburri. PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band will begin previews on January 17, 2017, prior to its official opening on January 22, 2017 as the inaugural production at the Mezzanine Theatre at A.R.T./NY Theatres (502 West 53rd Street at 10th Avenue). The limited engagement will play through February 11, 2017.
In PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band, Peer is a brash young man on a journey to discover his ultimate self in a rock music odyssey about risk, reinvention and going roundabout. Ma-Yi Theater Company's remaking of Henrik Ibsen's classic 1876 verse drama asks what it means when we sacrifice everything to be most fully ourselves. With a new American President about to take office, PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band is both a cautionary tale, and a reminder of how to remain true to ourselves.
PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band features a multicultural cast of seven Asian, Latin, African-American and Caucasian actor-musicians, with co-composer Matt Park (Peer), playing guitar; co-composer Paul Lieber (Bandleader, Troll King, Boyg, Boy, George, Captain), playing guitar and synthesizers; Mia Katigbak (Ose, Begriffenfeld, Priest), playing keyboard and synthesizers; Rocky Vega (Solvay), playing piano and keyboard; Uton Onyejekwe (Helga, Husband, John), playing bass; Angel Desai (Ingrid, Lady in Green, Anitra, Hannah, Angel), playing electric violin; and Titus Tompkins (Mads, Wife, Kesi, Strange Passenger), playing percussion and mandolin.
Scenic design is by Meredith Reis, costume design is by Asta Hostetter, lighting design is by Oliver Wason and sound design is by Kenneth Goodwin.
PEER GYNT & the Norwegian Hapa Band will perform Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8:00 PM; with matinees Saturday at 2:00 PM and Sunday at 5:00 PM. For tickets and information: visit www.ma-yitheatre.org.
