The limited engagement of Patrick Marber's acclaimed play Closer, presented by Four Dreamers Theater Company, begins performances tonight at the historic Gene Frankel Theatre in New York. A stinging look at love and betrayal in the modern world, Closer chronicles the chaotic intertwining of four lives over the course of four and a half years. The play premiered on Broadway in 1999 with direction from Marber.
Playing the four characters whose lives are forever changed during the play are Abbey Dehnert, Amy Hessler, Arash Mokhtar, and Joseph W. Rodriguez (Buffalo Hair w/
Jeffrey Wright at the Public, Richard III w/
Austin Pendleton). This production will feature direction from Eric Tucker (
Stella Adler Theatre Hamlet w/
William Hurt).
In Closer, Dan, an obituary writer, meets Alice, a stripper, after an accident in the street. Eighteen months later, they are a couple, and Dan has written a novel inspired by her life. While posing for his book jacket cover, Dan meets Anna, a photographer. He pursues her, but she rejects his advances despite their mutual attraction. Obsessing over Anna, Dan vents his frustration in an online chat room, where he meets Larry, a dermatologist. Pretending to be Anna, Dan arranges for them to meet the next day at an aquarium, but when Larry arrives, so too coincidentally does the real Anna. Dan's seemingly harmless practical joke sets in motion a series of unpredictable events that fuel this quartet's struggle to find intimacy in the modern world.
Closer will run through December 20th at the
Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond Street), playing Wednesdays-Sundays, with 7:30pm performances Wed, Thur, Fri, and Sat evenings as well as 3pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. There is also a performance on Tuesday, 12/15 at 7:30pm.
