Producer Theresa Wozunk (The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess) announced today that Liberty: A Monumental New Musical will play a limited seven-week engagement at Theatre 80 (80 St. Marks Place) this fall.
Acclaimed actor/director Evan Pappas will make his NYC directing debut when he stages the new musical. Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, a timely and entertaining theatrical event that tells the story of our country's most famous, undocumented immigrant, will play performances Tuesday, October 14 through Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Currently preparing for an expanded Off-Broadway run, Liberty: A Monumental New Musical will play four performances weekly for the general public and school groups. The new musical made its world premiere as a full production in 2012 at the Warner Theatre in Torrington, Connecticut to rave reviews. The musical has been the centerpiece of many events celebrating the Statue of Liberty, including the 125th Anniversary and the reopening of the crown. High-profile readings and workshop presentations have featured the talents of Diana DeGarmo, Sasha Allen, and Dee Roscioli in the role of "Liberty."
Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, featuring a book and lyrics by Dana Leslie Goldstein with music by Jon Goldstein, tells the story of a beautiful French immigrant who arrives in New York Harbor in 1884. The powerful, sweeping new musical follows the statuesque immigrant's struggle, strife, and success in the everevolving country she's come to symbolize. Liberty: A Monumental New Musical was adapted from original material by Dana Leslie Goldstein, Jon Goldstein, and Robert Bruce McIntosh.
Evan Pappas has a long list of credits as both an actor and director. He appeared on Broadway in My Favorite Year, Parade, Putting It Together, and A Chorus Line; and in the West End productions of Merrily We Roll Along and Follies. As a director, Pappas has staged regional productions of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Funny Girl, Parallel Lives, and A Man of No Importance. !On its journey to the New York stage, Liberty: A Monumental New Musical has amassed a group of diverse partners in the tourism, culture and hospitality fields. These partners include The Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island Foundation, Governor's Island, NYC Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, The New York Immigration Coalition, Tenement Museum, Wall Street Experience, NYC Liberty, Yuengling, NYC Arts, Circle Line, Intrepid Museum, World Yacht, Manhattan by Sail, Liberty Helicopters, Gray Panthers, Theater Garden, Bon Chon, Glass House Tavern, Hot Bread Kitchen, Maoz, Ovelia, Me Oko, and La Mela.
