Judy Garland's Private, Long-Lost Recordings Inspire New Show Making NYC Debut

Her words. His voice. Hollywood legend Judy Garland's infamous private recordings are the basis of The Book That I'm Going to Write, By Judy Garland, faithfully adapted and performed by Jason Powell. On the heels of winning The Producer's Encore Award at Hollywood Fringe in Los Angeles, the show makes its New York City debut on November 3 at The Jerry Orbach Theater (1627 Broadway at 50th Street) for three performances through November 5.

In 1964, hot on the heels of a historic comeback concert at Carnegie Hall and the triumph of producing a successful weekly variety television series for CBS, Garland decided to write her memoirs. Encouraged by her publisher to put her thoughts and memories on tape to be transcribed later, the recordings Garland made alone at home revealed a deeply pained woman largely unknown to the public.

Directed by Phillip Fazio, Powell delivers Garland's word with surgical precision - word for word and breath by breath - in a manner that invokes Judy Garland nearly 50 years after her death. In the show, Powell not only sets the record straight about her storied career and troubled family life, but also settles old scores with incendiary recriminations and a litany of untold truths about every person who had ever wronged her. This honest depiction of Garland in her own words is not to be missed.

Produced by Right Angle Entertainment and McSmith Family Entertainment, The Book That I'm Going to Write, By Judy Garland takes the stage for three performances November 3, 4 and 5 at The Jerry Orbach Theater in the historic Time Square Theater District. Regionally he has directed August: Osage County, Follies, Proof, Sunday in the Park with George, Ragtime, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, City of Angels, and Grey Gardens. Phillip has a BFA from The Boston Conservatory, alumni of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director's Lab, and currently pursuing a MFA from Pennsylvania State University (graduating in 2020).
