JaffeHolden Announces Improvements Made to Renovated David H. Koch Theater

Mark Holden, Chairman and Director of Design of JaffeHolden, is delighted to announce the firm's work on the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, scheduled to reopen with Hugo Weisgall's Esther on November 7th. Among the world's most respected and sought-after acoustical design firms, JaffeHolden's expertise at successfully designing the sound for diverse venues is highlighted by their recent work in renovating AlIce Tully Hall at Lincoln Center - a project that received international critical acclaim - and the new performance spaces at The Juilliard School, completed in October.

JaffeHolden was retained jointly by New York City Ballet and New York City Opera as the acousticians for the renovation of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. In collaboration with JCJ Architecture and Schuler Shook Theatre Planners, JaffeHolden provided consultation regarding the acoustic impact of all renovations planned in the Theater. These have included enlarging the orchestra pit thereby increasing the acoustical presence of the orchestra and improving balance and communication between the orchestra and performers; modifying the stage apron; replacing all seats with new material that has optimal acoustic characteristics; and designing an attractive and acoustically reflective fire curtain to create a more flexible performance space.

JaffeHolden was also responsible for the design of new acoustic side walls near the theater's proscenium, as well as the installation of quiet heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. Using sophisticated design techniques and computer simulations, the firm has upgraded and modernized important elements in the theater to enhance the artistic experience of the opera and ballet, for both audiences and performers alike. These important acoustical interventions have eliminated the need for the use of an electronic enhancement system in the theater.
