A tale of soulmates set in Ancient India arrived in New York City on November 7th, 2014 for a three-weekend run off-Broadway at the Medicine Show Theatre. Written, directed and produced by Ms. Nishi Rajan, a New York City-based singer/songwriter and actress, 'The Rajah's Son & Princess Labam' is an original work whose message is one of love, family and friendship. Part musical, part comedy and part drama, the play is not your Indian mother's fairytale. It is modern, Americanized and comprised of 26 actors who give solid ensemble performances.

Audiences members were delighted by the dry wit, humor and joy contained in the play as well as the dance and musical numbers. Most loved performances were those of Narrator Laurel Andersen, entertainer Indio Davila as King Suresh, Noa Carmel as Durga, Saim Hyder as Dharmendra and Nishi Rajan as Mata-Ji. It is to be noted Ms. Rajan and her cast sing all her songs a cappella, normally a daunting feat but one ably accomplished by this talented cast. Child actors Swayam Ranjeet Bhatia, Elliot Nieva, Liam Collins and Fiona Shea enchanted and delighted audiences.

In addition to solid performances, audiences were treated to classical Indian dance by Ms. Vaishali Chaudhuri of Queens who performs the ancient Indian dance of Bharatanatyam during the first intermission. Ms. Rajan states: "Vaishali listened to my songs and choreographed three dance numbers. She taught actors who had never danced before and helped them feel comfortable and look beautiful."

Ms. Rajan states her actors were also taught stage combat by Mr. Alex Kabiri. Mr. Hemang Sharma and Mr. Franck Raharinosy who play the principal leads worked with Mr. Kabiri, a fourth-degree black belt, to perfect wrestling and combat maneuvers.

The final weekend of performances is slated for November 21 and 22, 2014. The play begins at 8pm with a run-time of two and one-half hours, including two ten-minute intermissions Tickets may be purchased for $25 in advance via the EventBrite link below or for $35 (cash-only) prior to the performance at the Medicine Show Theatre.
