Double K Film & Theater's INTERVIEW: A New Musical, produced by Dimo Hyun Jun Kim, Soo Ro Kim, Min Jong Kim & Matthew Thomas Burda, will open Off-Broadway at the Theatre at St Clement's for a limited run. The new mega-hit psycho musical thriller from Korea & Japan will begin Previews on February 7, 2017, prior to a February 10th Opening.
The show features original music by Soo Hyun Huh, Lyrics & Translation by Bryan Michaels, originally written by Jung Hwa Choo. INTERVIEW made its world premiere at Soo Hyun Jae Theatre in Seoul, Korea in September 2016 & then ran to sold-out crowds in Kyoto & Tokyo.
When a famous psychologist & author calls a temp agency for an apprenticeship, the perfect candidate appears at his door. Witty, studious & eager to please, Matt Sinclair quickly makes an impression with Dr. Eugene Harper. All is not as it appears, however & what starts as an interview, quickly turns sinister as the author's true motives are revealed. INTERVIEW tells the story of a psychologist, a criminal defendant & a legal system that would stop at nothing to gain an alleged killer's confession, even if it means driving the accused to the brink of insanity.
INTERVIEW: A New Musical stars Josh Bardier (Hoi Polloi at Theatre Row), Adam Dietlein (Gaston in the first international tour of Disney's Beauty & the Beast) & Erin Kommor (Off-Broadway debut) & will be directed by Dimo Hyun Jun Kim (Green Card, Comfort Women) & Yossef K.
What many New York theatregoers may not know is that South Korea has quickly grown to be the third biggest market for musical theatre after New York & London over the past 15 years. It all started with the 2001 production of Phantom of the Opera, through which many audience members had their first taste of what Broadway shows are like. Hundreds of new musicals are born on the South Korean theatre scene every year, in both smaller Off-Broadway-like theatres, as well as huge 2000+ seat theatres. Some of the Korean-born musicals have even toured on Broadway, such as The Last Empress (1998) & Hero (2011).
INTERVIEW: A New Musical is the first Korean-born musical, written & composed by Korean artists, to be mounted Off-Broadway. This will be New York audiences' first chance to see what a musical from another culture (7000 miles away!) is like & how the story touches them just as any English language musical would.
Dimo Hyun Jun Kim (Director/Producer) is a theatre director from Seoul, South Korea, Chairman of Dimo Kim Musical Theatre Factory LLC & Theatre Department Chair of Born Star Training Center NYC. Dimo made his Off-Broadway debut with Comfort Women: A New Musical, nominated for Best Off-Broadway Musical by BroadwayWorld & the first all-Asian Off-Broadway cast to be led by an East Asian national. Other Off-Broadway shows include Green Card: A New Musical & Innermind. Selected credits include Richard III, See What I Wanna See, A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like It, West Side Story, Advice to the Players, The Cherry Orchard, Godspell, The Upper Lip, Finding My Way Back Home, Promenade, Life is A Dream, West Side Ballad, Our Town, Art, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Spring is Arising & Jesus Christ Superstar. In June, Dimo will be producing the Asian Musical Theatre Festival in Lincoln Center.
Dimo added "It's a pleasure to bring this new musical from Korea to the American Theatre. Over the past 20 years, the Korean musical theatre market has been dominated with Broadway licensed musicals. We are fortunate to have this original musical premier in Seoul & now is opening Off-Broadway. My hope is that this show will provide more opportunities to Asian artists in the future who also dream of working in American theatre."
