Carlos Dengler, former member of the indie rock band Interpol, will continue the run of his successful solo show Homo Sapiens Interruptus as part of the Fringe Encore Series at SoHo Playhouse in October. Scott Wesley Slavin directs.
Carlos Dengler takes us on a journey of origins in his exciting monologue, Homo Sapiens Interruptus, "an immensely engaging autobiographical solo show...high on evocative
ideas" (Time Out New York). Deskside, a la Spalding Gray, Carlos recounts his adolescent discovery of the heavy metal music of Megadeth and Metallica, and how the spirit of his headbanging youth paved the way for his career as a founding member of the band Interpol. The monologue interweaves Carlos' musical journey with a mystical evocation of human origins. Intelligent and heartfelt, Carlos' story explores how youthful obsession often, and heartbreakingly, shatters against ineluctable currents of change and adulthood. "Mr Dengler is a genial raconteur...we rarely encounter his kind of experience at the theater" (New York Times).
"When I was 14, heavy metal was everything. My parents, you know, for various reasons like mental illness and alcoholism, they just weren't present for me. And growing up in Queens in the 80s, it was just crime-ridden and awful. So metal was the panacea, the armor, my emotional safety net. It gave me power when before I had none. Then Grunge happened and destroyed metal's legitimacy. And that's when I lost it all. And everything I did after that moment - academia, NYU, Interpol - were these different reactions to that loss. My play is about how that search just kept furnishing dead ends for me until, thanks to a chance encounter, I chose to look at the whole experience from a completely different angle."
Fringe Encore Series showcases the top productions from both the New York and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals.
