HIS ROYAL HIPNESS LORD BUCKLEY Returns to 59E59 Theaters Tonight

59E59 Theaters hosts a return engagement of HIS ROYALHIPNESS LORD BUCKLEY, written and performed by Jake Broder and directed by David Ellenstein. Produced by North Coast Repertory Theatre, HIS ROYAL HIPNESS LORD BUCKLEY begins performances tonight, December 6, for a limited engagement through Sunday, January 1. After sold out runs in the US and internationally, Lord Buckley returns to NYC to "blow your wig away!" Backed by a jazz trio, Jake Broder, in a performance filled with "moments of mind-expanding exhilaration" (The New Yorker), channels the counter culture comedic icon, translating the great stories and histories of the world in to a bebop infused language Buckley called 'the hipsemantic.'

One of the most influential comics of all time, Lord Buckley's work inspired a veritable who's who of artists - from Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan to Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, and Whoopi Goldberg. HIS ROYAL HIPNESS LORD BUCKLEY is based on Buckley's routines from the 40s and 50s, which feel remarkably relevant even today.

Jake Broder is joined by actor Michael Lanahan (Louis and Keely: Live at the Sahara at the Geffen Playhouse) and a jazz trio featuring Brad Russell (bass), Mark Hartman (piano), and a drummer to be announced.

The design team includes D. Gillespie (set); Aaron Rumley (lights); C. Parker (costumes); and J. Coltrane (props). The Production Stage Manager is Aaron Rumley.

The performance schedule is Tuesday - Thursday at 7:15 PM; Friday at 8:15 PM; Saturday at 2:15 PM & 8:15 PM; and Sunday at 3:15 PM & 7:15 PM. Please note the Holiday performance schedule: Sat. Jake Broder (writer/performer) just sold his new TV series "Typewriter Days" to Revolution Studios. It is about a gaggle of rebellious print journalists at the Commodore hotel in Beirut, 1982. His play, Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara, directed by Taylor Hackford, is currently on tour around the US. His produced screenplays include, The Barn (winner of the 2004 British Independent Film Award for Best Feature), Esther's Pool, The Verge and A Car Stopped. Features in development: Diz for Prez (about Dizzy Gillespie's presidential run in 1963) and The Forger (about master forger Han Van Meegeren). He wrote and composed the score for the jazz musical Miravel (winner of 2016 LADCC Award for Best Score) and wrote the forthcoming Our American Hamlet (about Edwin Booth) in development with the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. As an actor, Jake originated the role of Louis in Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara, winning two Ovation Awards, as well as LADCC, Garland and LA Weekly awards for Best Actor. His other theater credits include: Mozart in Amadeus directed by Sir Peter Hall (West End London, Broadway, LA), When Harry Met Sally with Alyson Hannigan and Luke Perry (West End), Lord Buckley in His RoyalHipness Lord Buckley (Off Broadway, Off West End, LA) and Ophelia & Juliet in the Reduced Shakespeare Company's Complete Works of Shakespeare show in the West End, as well as on a national tour. Film includes: Bad Milo!, Kevin Spacey's Beyond the Sea, Shadow Dancer, L'entente Cordiale, In A Day, The Barn (for which he was awarded the 2004 BIFA award), The Chicago 8, as well as the upcoming thriller Sleepwalker, with Richard Armitage. Jake trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and lived and worked there for 15 years before coming back to the United States. In NY, he studied Saxophone with Lee Konitz and went to the New England Conservatory and Tufts University.

David Ellenstein (director). Born into a theatrical family, David has worked in theaters across the country. In 2003, he became the Artistic Director of North Coast Repertory Theatre producing over 100 productions and directing more than 40. His favorites include: Way Downriver (West Coast Premiere), Freud's Last Session, Faded Glory (World Premiere), Mandate Memories (World Premiere), Becoming Cuba (World Premiere), Time Stands Still, and Words by: Ira Gershwin (World Premiere).
