The Average-Sized Mermaid, a new romantic comedy by Jessica Fleitman about love and female empowerment , will receive its world premiere today, February 3, at the historic Gene Frankel Theatre in New York City.
The play, which revolves around the chaos that ensues after a heartbroken woman suddenly transforms into a mermaid, will feature direction from Kara-Lynn Vaeni and is being presented by State of Play Productions (Rebecca Jones & Chloe Demrovsky, producers).
In The Average-Sized Mermaid, kindergarten teacher Miriam Moselle l oses it one morning in front of her class the day after she'd been dumped by her two-timing fiance. After possibly traumatizing the six-year-olds indefinitely with a tirade about male chauvinism in "?The Little Mermaid,"? Miriam inexplicably turns into a mermaid herself during an argument with the school's principal. When her unusual situation begins to attract media attention, Miriam decides to use her newfound fame to get back at her ex, but soon discovers that there are bigger fish to fry. Can she stretch her 15 minutes long enough to address the deep questions in life? Will she find her voice, will she find herself, and will she ever fall in love again?
Starring as Miriam in the play will be Michelle Concha (The City That Cried Wolf at 59E59), and joining her in the cast are Jimmy L. Allen, Andrew Bridges, Starr Kirkland, Christiane Seidel, and Joe Sevier.
The production's creative team includes Brendan Barr (sound design and original music), Loren Egan (choreography), Jarrod Jahoda (lighting design), Pip Ngo (dramaturgy), Ryan Palmer (scenic design), and Alexandra Townsend (costume design).
The Average-Sized Mermaid will run from February 3rd through February 14th at the Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond Street) with performances Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8pm with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. There will also be a 7pm performance on Sunday, February 7th.
