There is a little play Off-Broadway defying the NYC theater district odds. Growing Up Gonzales, the story of two brothers in search of life, goes into its 13th week at The Actors Temple Theater.

Before Johnny goes in to clean out his deceased younger brother's apartment he says, "my little brother was very quiet and shy...there are big fancy words for it now but back then quiet and shy was all we had". His little brother's life on the Autism Spectrum is front and center in this hilarious yet tragic story.

What is behind the success of this longshot, Latino play? Latino plays on and off Broadway tend to have a specific audience that supports Latino plays and once that audience finishes the run typically ends. Growing Up Gonzales, with its unique and unorthodox style seems to have found a way to cross over into a broad and diverse audience. If you stand outside the theater after the show the majority of the stream of people coming out are not Latino. If you speak to these non-Latino patrons they all say the same thing with many different words. "This one man show was powerful, compelling, beautifully performed, beautifully written and deeply penetrating...an unexpected treat".

This Off-Broadway surprise is written and directed by Felix Rojas and stars Andres "Chulisi" Rodriguez. Lighting Design by James "Pres" Carter, Sound by Nick Rojas, Production Manager Saida Rios. Executive produced by Dr. Michael and Sandra Lang, Linda Garcia, John and Maria Torres O'Connor and Freddy Ramirez.
