GREAT GATSBY Musical Satire Comes To NYC Image

GATSBY: A New Musical will make its premiere as part of the New York Theater Festival's NY SUMMERFEST 2019 at the HUDSON GUILD THEATER on September 10th, 14th & 15th.

GATSBY is a satirical musical send-up of F. Scott Fitzgerald's infamous tale of sex, crime, and the raucous parties of the roaring twenties. It follows wannabe stockbroker Nick Carraway, a well-to-do mid-Westerner who moves to Long Island and quickly becomes the center of a web that connects Daisy Buchanan (Nick's debutante cousin), Tom Buchanan (her philandering, polo-playing husband), Myrtle Wilson (his brassy mistress) and Jordan Baker (a flapper-turned-golfer) to one Jay Gatsby, Nick's opulent and mysterious next door neighbor. The more closely their lives become entangled, the more quickly they unravel. Part tragedy, part comedy, and part musical noir, GATSBY re-colors this vivid founding myth of the American dream through the jazz age's many musical forms.

GATSBY arrives in New York direct from the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA in Philadelphia, where it was workshopped and produced under the guidance of UPenn faculty member and Philadelphia Magazine theater critic David Fox in April 2018, and was the recipient of an Office of the Provost's Year of Innovation Grant.

The 11-person ensemble is lead by Matheus Ting (The King and I 2nd national tour) as Nick Carraway, LINAE' C. BULLOCK (Revelation: The Musical) as Daisy Buchanan, STEVEN CZAJKOWSKI as Jay Gatsby, and LAURA HETHERINGTON as Jordan Baker, with ANDREAS SCHMIDT (Tom Buchanan), RHETTA MYKEAL (Myrtle Wilson), MARCIA BECHER (Wolfsheim), Patrick Clark (George Wilson), BILL WETHERBEE (Klipspringer/Henry Gatz), SHELLEY L. MITCHELL (Adolfa/Catherine), and BRADLEY LEWIS (Jethro) completing the cast.

GATSBY features a book and lyrics by University of Pennsylvania Office of the Provost's Year of Innovation Grant recipient DANIELLE E. MOORE, who will also direct, and a score by MOORE and JACOB Ryan Smith, who recently made his Feinstein's/54 Below debut with Stories of You and Me: The Songs of Jacob Ryan Smith. The new musical is produced by MICHAEL E. MILLER in partnership with GLG, whose other upcoming projects include AUDREY, a new musical about the life of actress Audrey Hepburn, a reading of which will be produced in January 2020 as part of the East Broadway Theatre Project.
