On the eve of the 2008 elections, three of America's most celebrated Shakespeareans come together to look at Shakespeare's most successful political leader, Henry V. Featuring the Shakespeare Society's signature combination of performance and commentary, the evening will trace the progress of this remarkable figure, role-playing his way from prodigal son to the leader of a nation. What are the keys to-and costs of-political success?
Due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming film, Liev Schreiber has had to withdraw from this event.
Tony Award winner Richard Easton (The Invention of Love, The Coast of Utopia, Henry IV) will be reading Falstaff and Henry IV, reprising the role he played in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Henry IV on Broadway opposite Kevin Kline.
Christian Camargo, who will read Prince Hal and Henry V, is a founding company member of Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London, is currently performing in Arthur Miller's All My Sons on Broadway. He will play Hamlet this spring for Theater for a New Audience. Other credits include Theater for a New Audience's Coriolanus, and Henry V at the New York Shakespeare Festival. His Broadway debut was in David Hare's Skylight.
Jeremy Strong, who will read the roles of Poins and Williams, is currently playing Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons at the Roundabout Theatre Company. Last season he played the lead in David Ives' New Jerusalem. Other credits include Richard Nelson's Conversations in Tusculum (Public Theater); Richard Nelson's Frank's Home (Playwrights Horizons); John Patrick Shanley's Defiance (MTC).
Elisabeth Waterston will read selections from the role of Katherine. She most recently appeared as Miranda in The Tempest at CSC. Other New York credits include The Young Left (Cherry Lane), Father Joy (SPF), Much Ado About Nothing (NYSF), Spring Awakening, Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen, The Vortex.
David Scott Kastan, General Editor of the Arden Shakespeare and George M. Bodman Professor of English at Yale University, will examine Hal's development as a politician looking at the ways impersonation, role-playing and language are used politically and theatrically as well as what Shakespeare shows are the costs of political power-what is sacrificed in pursuit of political success.
The cast also includes Jeremy Strong who is currently appearing in the Roundabout Theatre production of A Man for All Seasons and whose other credits include the lead role of Spinoza in David Ives's New Jerusalem at CSC.
