Diana DeGarmo, star of the Off-Broadway hit THE TOXIC AVENGER; will play the title role in a one-night-only, concert presentation of LIBERTY: A NEW MUSICAL. Produced by the New York Musical Theater Festival and Theresa Wozunk, LIBERTY: A NEW MUSICAL will make its premiere at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Theatre Row's Acorn Theatre. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
DeGarmo first became a household name as a popular finalist on Season 3 of "American Idol." Theatre audiences may recognize her from her critically acclaimed turn as "Penny Pingleton" in Broadway's Hairspray or as the star of the first national tour of Brooklyn: The Musical. She recently starred in the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and can currently be seen playing the role of "Sarah," the sexy, blind librarian in The Toxic Avenger, winner of the Outer Critics' Circle Award for "Best New Off-Broadway Musical."
Directed by
Igor Goldin (Yank!), LIBERTY features a book and lyrics by
Dana Leslie Goldstein and music by
Jonathan Goldstein. Currently preparing for an expanded run in the summer of 2010, LIBERTY tells the story of America's most famous immigrant (DeGarmo) who arrives from France in 1884 amid anti-foreigner fervor. With powerful political forces working against her and only a precious few on her side, Liberty ultimately wins over the people of the United States and takes her rightful place on the pedestal. LIBERTY serves as a theatrical reminder not only of what this country was meant to become, but how we have, in recent years, lost sight of the "Golden Door."
