Ryan Spahn and Matthew Montelongo, the stars of the Off-Broadway play "Daniel's Husband," are featured in an interview in the 50th episode of the entertainment podcast "Add This To Your List," available now for free on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher.
Two of the three hosts of the podcast, Tom Ciuba and Mark J. Parker, interviewed the actors before one of their final performances at the Westside Theater in Manhattan, asking them questions about their experience doing this emotional play, how it compares to other work they've done, what's next for them, and what films, TV shows, and plays they've loved watching in 2018. There's even a mention of the 80s slasher classic "Sleepaway Camp" during the recording (Spahn encouraged the cast to watch it at his apartment one day between performances) among other pop culture references.
Ciuba saw "Daniel's Husband," written by Michael McKeever and directed by Joe Brancato, and couldn't stop thinking about it. "I connected with this particular play unlike any other in 2018. An impressive set, tight script, and visceral performances from every actor in the show were the perfect ingredients for an honest and urgent story that captures everyone's attention from the moment the lights go up until well after curtain call." He then tweeted about the show from the Add This To Your list page (@addthis2urlist) and once the stars reacted, he decided to reach out to them personally and request an interview. The charming Spahn and Montelongo were up for it, and had a great 20-minute conversation before they warmed up for the 8PM performance. Then, after the interview, Ciuba saw the show a second time, this time with Parker, who was equally moved.
"Daniel's Husband" is a drama about a gay couple, Daniel (Spahn) and Mitchell (Montelongo) who have been together for 7 years in a loving, committed relationship, but are still not married because Mitchell doesn't believe in marriage (gay or straight.) A tragic turn of events forces Mitchell to wonder if he should have married Daniel instead of arguing with him about the subject. The play closes on December 30th, and tickets are still available for most of the remaining performances.
"Add This To Your List" is a weekly podcast with hosts Ciuba, Parker, and Funmi Sunmonu (based in Los Angeles) discussing their "list" of recommendations and warnings. Their slogan is "Love it, Hate it, Add it, Skip it," and the goal of the podcast is to help followers decide what theatre, TV shows, movies, music, books, podcasts, games, and apps are worth their time. In addition to these recommendations, the trio discuss entertainment headlines and topics, and have had other special guests who work in the industry on the show earlier this year.
"Daniel's Husband" is not only one of Ciuba's picks of the week in the podcast's 50th episode, but it's also his pick for the best theatre of 2018, which will be discussed in the 51st episode out in early January.
