HASAN MINHAJ: HOMECOMING KING, (www.homecomingkingshow.com) the theatrical debut of humorist and "The Daily Show" correspondent Hasan Minhaj, will play a limited engagement at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street, NYC), opening tonight, October 23. Directed byGreg Walloch, Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King will run through November 15th. The show is produced by Mike Berkowitz and Mike Lavoie.
HASAN MINHAJ: HOMECOMING KING, the story of the "New Brown America," is based on true events from Minhaj's first generation Indian-American experience. Navigating between two worlds, it follows Minhaj's arrival in the US, meeting his estranged sister, interracial love, racism, bullying, and his family's quest to achieve the elusive American Dream.
"I'm trying to have a nuanced conversation about bigotry, acceptance, and forgiveness, even though these subjects can be embarrassing," said Hasan Minhaj. "We all know morality and life aren't black or white...they're Drake. When it comes to racism, hopefully this show will help us have a real discussion and get our '50 Shades of Drake' on. I'll share my stories which hopefully will inspire others to share theirs."
A tall order, but Jon Stewart believes, "Hasan Minhaj has the goods. He's funny, thoughtful, and really smart." And it's not just about his "tall and amazing hair. You're going to laugh; cry, because you, unlike me, can still feel." Catherine Burns, creative director of The Moth, agrees, adding "Minhaj is one of the most authentic voices to come onto the storytelling scene in years."
HASAN MINHAJ: HOMECOMING KINGis written and performed by Hasan Minhaj and directed byGreg Walloch. Scenic design is by Sara C. Walsh, lighting design by Sarah Lurie, and costume design by Kristen Buckels.
Tickets, ranging from $30-40, as well as a complete performance schedule are available at Homecomingkingshow.com - an interactive website where fans can share their own stories and continue the dialogue.
