As part of its 2017-2018 season Colt Coeur has announced the company's 9th world premiere, The Big and the Small, a new play by Amelia Roper, directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt.
Presented in a partnership with New York Theater Workshop's inaugural Next Door Series, The Big and the Small will begin performances at The 4th Street Theater (located at 83 East 4th Street) on April 14, 2018, with a final performance set for May 6, 2018. An official opening night will be announced at a later date.
Funerals are for the living. What happened, why, who did it and how - none of that matters in the moments before. A play about those moments before, The Big and the Small is a series of two-handers, each in identical rooms in a grand hotel in Zürich. As guests enjoy the last moments of their private, awkward, funny and not-so-funny lives, themes of nationalism, tourism, social responsibility, isolation, class and gender roles are all explored. In a time of global crisis, what does neutrality mean for a country full of banks?

Next Door at NYTW provides a home for companies and artists who are producing their own work. Meeting the artists where they are in their process, this initiative provides each project with subsidized resources and space for development and performance in the newly renovated Fourth Street Theatre. As part of an ongoing effort to expand support for artists at every stage of their careers, this series will serve nearly 100 additional artists in the first year alone.
This play was commissioned and developed by Colt Coeur, in partnership with the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
