Carnegie Hall Announces Their Holiday Season

This December, Carnegie Hall continues its long-standing tradition of providing audiences with a place to gather and experience the transformative power of music during the holiday season, presenting six special concerts in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage and Zankel Hall. Musical offerings range from traditional classical works of Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven to popular holiday favorites along with new holiday treats like the concert adaptation of the beloved children's classic, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! for family audiences.

On two consecutive evenings, Friday, December 10 and Saturday, December 11 at 8:00 p.m., Music Director Steven Reineke leads The New York Pops and Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell in a program of holiday favorites in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Dubbed as "Broadway's last leading man," Stokes Mitchell is famous for his rich and commanding baritone, as well as for his memorable performances in Broadway productions of Ragtime, Kiss Me, Kate!, and Man of La Mancha.

The New York Pops continues their celebration of the holiday season on December 11 at 2:00 p.m. with a Carnegie Hall Family Concert, performing a concert adaptation of the beloved children's classic by Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, narrated by Brian Stokes Mitchell with Mitchell Kilby as The Grinch, Elena Zahlmann as Max the Dog and Izzy Hanson-Johnston playing Cindy Lou Who, along with other favorite songs of the season. In addition, Essential Voices USA under the direction of Judith Clurman, children from New York Theatre Ballet and singers and dancers of Camp Broadway Chorus are also appearing. This Family Concert is presented by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute. Recommended for children ages 5-12, every child receives KidsNotes, a concert program filled with activities and information about the concert. A pre-concert activity led by New York Pops Director of Education Dr. Sherrie Maricle will take place one hour before the performance and is free to all ticket holders.

On Saturday, December 11 at 10:00 p.m., WFUV's Live at Zankel series continues with singer/songwriter Martin Sexton performing a solo show of favorites from his rich catalog along with festive holiday songs from his album Camp Holiday. Known for his powerful voice and fluid guitar sound, Sexton's music has been featured in film and television including NBC's "Scrubs" and Showtime's "Brotherhood." His latest release, Sugarcoating, was issued by his KTR record label in April 2010. The WFUV Live at Zankel series continues-curated by WFUV's Music Director, Rita Houston-on March 19 with British guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson, and concludes on April 8 with singer Edie Brickell and her new band The Gaddabouts.

The New York String Orchestra returns with its ensemble of top students selected from live auditions held across the nation for two concerts in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage conducted by Artistic Director Jaime Laredo. For more than 40 years, this group of 64 young musicians-in-training (selected in national auditions from over 400 applicants) has performed at Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve. This year, on Friday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m., the orchestra performs Mozart's Overture to Così fan tutte and Symphony No. 31 in D Major "Paris" as well as a double concerto by Mendelssohn with violinist Jennifer Koh and pianist Benjamin Hochman. The musicians end the year on a high note with a final concert for the young musicians of the annual New York String Orchestra Seminar on Tuesday, December 28 at 8:00 p.m. In the second annual program, the young musicians bring their youthful energy and musicianship to a performance including Barber's Capricorn Concerto, Brahms's Double Concerto in A Minor with violinist Daniel Hope and cellist Paul Watkins, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, "Eroica." The orchestra's appearances to capacity audiences each December have become a Carnegie Hall tradition and are the culmination of the New York String Orchestra Seminar, a nationally-acclaimed professional training program founded in 1969 for highly gifted 15 to 22-year-old musicians, held under the auspices of Mannes College The New School for Music. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma attended the workshop as a teenager, calling it "one of the defining moments" of his career.

For Carnegie Hall Corporation presentations taking place in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, a limited number of seats, priced at $10, will be available day-of-concert beginning at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday until one hour before the performance or until supply lasts. The exceptions are Carnegie Hall Family Concerts and gala events. These $10 tickets are available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Carnegie Hall Box Office only. There is a two-ticket limit per customer.

In addition, for all Carnegie Hall presentations in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage a limited number of partial view (seats with obstructed or limited sight lines or restricted leg room) will be sold for 50% of the full price.
