MCC Theater (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, William Cantler, Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director) announced today that Carrie will be filmed and preserved for the Lincoln Center Library For The Performing Arts' Theatre On Film and Tape Archive during the matinee performance on Saturday, April 7th, marking the first-ever professional recording of the legendary show. As previously announced, Carrie will close following the evening performance on Sunday, April 8, 2012 (after 34 previews and 46 performances), concluding an initial 8-week run and 2-week extension.
"We're thrilled that Carrie will be preserved in this way and that it will live on in the memories of the thousands of theatre goers who saw and loved it," the MCC Artistic Directors commented.
The newly reworked and fully re-imagined production of Carrie features music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford (Academy Award winning composer and lyricist for the original film Fame) and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (who also adapted the 1974 novel by Stephen King for the 1976 Brian DePalma film). Performances for Carrie began January 31, 2012, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, NYC) and officially opened on March 1, 2012; the show was originally scheduled to run through March 25, 2012. Yesterday, the show's leading ladies, Marin Mazzie (who plays Carrie's evangelical mother, Margaret White) and Molly Ranson (who stars in the title role), were each nominated for a Lortel Award for their performances in the show.
Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, the musical of Carrie hasn't been seen since its legendary 1988 Broadway production. Set today, in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, the cast also includes Christy Altomare, Carmen Cusack, Jeanna de Waal, Derek Klena, Ben Thompson, Wayne Wilcox, Corey Boardman, Blair Goldberg, F. Michael Haynie, Andy Mientus, Elly Noble, Jen Sese, Mackenzie Bell, Jake Boyd and Anne Tolpegin.
The creative team of Carrie includes Matt Williams (choreography), Mary-Mitchell Campbell (Music Direction and Arrangements), David Zinn (Set Design), Emily Rebholz (Costume Design), Kevin Adams (Lighting Design), Sven Ortel (Projections Design), Jonathan Deans (Sound Design), Doug Besterman (Orchestrations), AnnMarie Milazzo (Vocal Design), Leah J. Loukas (Wig and Hair Design), and Rick Sordelet (Fight director).
Individual tickets for Carrie are priced from $55 to $89 with premium tickets available. A Front Row Rush policy will be in place for all performances March 27 – April 8, 2012. Two hours prior to each performance, tickets for the front row of the orchestra (11 seats) will be available at the box office for $20, to anyone under the age of 30, by showing a valid photo ID (one ticket per person). This program is in addition to MCC Theater's longstanding $20 Under 30 program, which is still available in advance, online and in person at the box office. Since 1970, the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) has preserved live theatrical productions and documented the creative contributions of distinguished artists and legendary figures of the theatre. With the consent and cooperation of the theatrical unions and each production's artistic collaborators, TOFT produces video recordings of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theatre productions as well as dialogues between notable theatre personalities. These recordings have revolutionized theatre research, ensuring that today's performances will be tomorrow's legacy, available to future generations for study and inspiration. Endowed, in part, by producer Lucille Lortel, TOFT is housed in a state-of-the-art screening room named in her honor. Titles in the collection may be found in the Library's online catalog (http://catalog.nypl.org/search) or by emailing or telephoning TOFT. The Archive is available to theatre professionals, students, or researchers with work or study-related reasons for viewing.
