After conducting 40+ interviews with Afghan civic leaders, NGO and State Dept. employees and prospective theatre companies in preparation for their multi-city, multi-year THEATRE FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT program, Bond Street Theatre deepens their company's commitment to this fractured country with a newly launched project. With the generous support of the United States Institute of Peace, this leading Artistic-Humanitarian Theatre brings their own brand of relief work back to Afghanistan.
Recognizing the company's near-decade-long commitment to the country, the staff at The Public Theater invited Artistic Director Joanna Sherman to participate in their post-show dialogue, In Conversation of THE GREAT GAME: Afghanistan, Dec. 17,2010. Also appearing in this discussion on RIGHTS & DEVELOPMENT are UCLA's Nushin Arbabzadah, NYU's Ishaq Nadiri, and the International Rescue Committee's Michael Young moderated by pollster Craig Charney.

About Bond Street Theatre's Commitment to Afghanistan:
Since 2003, Bond Street Theatre has been using the performing arts as the means to help reinvigorate Afghanistan's national voice. When cultural expression is eliminated, new ideas and individual voices for social improvement have no mouthpiece. Worldwide, theatre is recognized as an effective tool to distribute practical information to isolated communities and areas of high illiteracy. It is incumbent on America and Afghanistan's next generation of leaders to bring creative approaches to a myriad of societal problems. Bond Street's THEATRE FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT program builds the bonds that result in diplomatic opportunities in Afghanistan. So do such thought-provoking, critically acclaimed productions as The Public Theater's The Great Game here in New York City.
Bond Street Theatre's Ensemble of Artistic-Humanitarian Relief Workers will work collaboratively with four Afghan theatre companies to create programming and plays that address THEIR issues in THEIR communities across several provinces - reaching upwards of 30,000 women, men, children, refugees and strategic Afghan stakeholders and civic leaders. With workshops, performances and cross-cultural play development and production, Bond Street works collaboratively with artists and community leaders to address the most critical issues inherent to each community - training the trainers and advising on building the capacity of local organizations. Seeking to sustain and stabilize the people and their ability to utilize their own resources to address the social and economic climate of its current day, Bond Street's methodology is grounded in long-term impact for generations to come.
The project begins January 2011 and commences until December 2012.
