Bad Quarto Productions, a theatre company specializing in performing modern theatre using Shakespearean staging techniques, will stage What, Lamb! What, Ladybird! By Charlene V. Smith. What, Lamb!

What, Ladybird! Is an exploration of the evolution of the character of Juliet, both on stage and in the personal life of
the author.

In this unique examination of four centuries of performance and scholarship, Smith explores our conflicting
relationship with a character who is at once an impulsive girl and a courageous woman creating her own future. In
this hour long play featuring a chorus of five women, Smith explores whether we should consider Juliet a warning or a role model for 21st century women, and just how relevant Juliet's poetical passion is for the Tinder generation

Directed by Alex Dabertin, this production is performed in Bad Quarto Productions' signature style of combining modern text work with Shakespeare's staging conditions. This includes minimal rehearsal time, modern dress costumes and anachronistic props and set pieces, universal lighting, audience contact, live acoustic music and sound effects, minimal sets, and detailed text work. Our performances combine a heightened focus on the language of the playwright with the liveliness of improv to present shows with all of the energy and passion of
Shakespeare's original playing companies, but without the laborious refinement of most modern classics companies.

What, Lamb! What, Ladybird! will play at Studios 353 (353 W. 48th St., New York) from July 9th - 17th on the following days and times:

Saturday, July 9th: 8 PM
Sunday, July 10th: 8 PM
Friday, July 15th: 8 PM
Saturday, July 16th: 8 PM
Sunday, July 17h: 2 PM

The house opens 20 minutes before curtain times, and What, Lamb! What, Ladybird! has an approximately 60 minute running time. Come early and enjoy live music performed by the cast.

Of What, Lamb! What, Ladybird! director Alex Dabertin says "I am lucky to be building on a strong foundation in the script for What, Lamb! What, Ladybird! The arc that Charlene constructs shakes me and resonates with me. It is my animating question made particular and personal. The shift from self-denial to self-acceptance, even self-embrace, is a difficult one to accomplish in life and in theater, but Charlene does it with poetry, refreshing simplicity, and deep intelligence."

Bad Quarto Productions was founded in 2010 to explore the rarely performed plays of Shakespeare's time, and the ways in which Shakespeare's staging techniques can inform modern theatrical productions. The company has produced the earliest printed version of Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of a Shrew ("a shrew" not "the shrew"); the first performance of The Merry Devil of Edmonton in the modern era; and The Ballad of Dido, an original musical developed using Shakespearean techniques. Bad Quarto's performance style has found favor with audiences wherever we've played, and we continue to look for new ways of bridging the gap between Shakespeare's theatre and our own.
