One of my son's favorite children's book series is "Fly Guy" by Tedd Arnold. So when we heard that Theatreworks, one of New York's preeminent family theatre companies, was presenting a musical version of "Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl", we knew we had to check it out! Our favorite, buzzing hero's tale was part of a new musical revue based on favorite children's books. The show kicked off a new weekend performance series at the Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, and if "Fly Guy" was any indication, the rest of the series is sure to be a hit.
I still haven't taken my six year old to see his first Broadway show. It's too early for him to sit through something that long, that loud, and frankly, that expensive. We did have a successful visit to Madison Square Garden two years ago to see "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and my little guy put in 45 quality minutes before starting to squirm in his seat. Since then it's been purely kiddie theatre for the youngest of my two. If you're a theatre-loving parent who is used to Broadway level talent like me, then Theatreworks has your solution. A talented cast, amazing songs (including some originals from the musical team behind "Frozen", Robert Lopez and Kristin Anderson-Lopez) and terrific production values all squeezed into 50 palatable minutes of family-friendly fun. It's the perfect "pre Broadway" experience for your kids.
