"The Paparazzi" is a new musical about the tabloid news industry dominated by the fictional paper, the New York Beacon. In keeping with the premise, Algonquin Theater Productions has chosen to advertise its upcoming public readings on social media with a series of satirical, eye catching fake headlines. Each one features a member of the cast with a famous celebrity.
The strategy has proven to be wildly popular, with a new ad out virtually each day. Algonquin plans to continue utilizing the method of advertising as it gears up for a production this fall.
"The Paparazzi" will have three public readings to unveil the new show at The Davenport Theatre, 354 West 45th Street. Shows will be at 3pm and 7pm on March 19th and 1pm on March 20th. All shows are free and open to the public.
At a time when CNN, MSNBC and FOX are falling over themselves to fight the label of being 'fake news', the New York Beacon embraces it. "The Paparazzi" highlights the men and women who sacrifice their blood, their sweat and their dignity in an effort to get the raciest, steamiest, most provocative pictures and stories involving celebrities, regardless of the truth.
"The Paparazzi" has a book by Tony Sportiello, with music and lyrics by Al Tapper, the same team who created the Off Broadway shows "National Pastime" and "All Aboard". Music direction is by David Wolfson. Courtney Constantino is the producer, with Russ Marisak as stage manager. The cast includes Dana Aber, Fiore Barbini, L.R. Davidson, Abe Goldfarb, Lara Hayhurst, Ken Jennings, Laura Kaldis, Kelli Maguire, Michael McIntire, Spencer Plachy, Paige Sommerer, Dan Van Why and Viet Vo.
