Producer Eric Krebs asks, "What happens when 2 extraordinary singer/performers from Africa come together for an exploration of music and story telling?" Africa My Beautiful - an evening of story and song, with South African born Olivier and Obie Award-winnerThuli Dumakude, and Tanyaradzwa Tawenga "a suburban kid from Zimbabwe," - will play a limited 15-performance engagement at The Playroom Theater (151 West 46th Street - just east of Broadway.) Performances are set to begin on Monday, August 31st at 7pm and continue through September 30th.
In Africa My Beautiful, two African women - through story telling, personal reminiscence and music of traditional, classical and contemporary genres, and dance - capture a half-century of change as they each learn about the other's world.
"I have worked with the magnificent Thuli Dumakude for over thirty years, since she played the lead in Poppie Nongena off Broadway many years ago," says Krebs. "When she said to me that she wanted to try to develop and new show with a terrific and multi-talented unknown African singer, I gave her a space to work in and said, 'Go to it.' The results are a deeply moving performance that is drawing high praise in our workshops. So what's a producer to do?"
The performance schedule for Africa My Beautiful will be: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday @ 7pm.
All tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at www.theplayroomtheater.com.
