Ever feel like you're missing a piece of yourself? In his new one-man show, David Harrell explores what it's like as a performer to grow up with only one hand. Using baseball, Shakespeare, and even some spiritual guidance from Mr. T. - Harrell takes his audience on a quest to answer the question of whether a person is more than just the sum of their parts.
A Little Potato and Hard to Peel begins previews at the Jewel Box Theatre on September 17 with opening night set for September 24th. The production will play a limited engagement until October 11th. Previous versions of the show have been performed with The P.I.T., Wide Eyed Productions, Film Woman the Show, and The Episcopal Actors Guild.
Harrell, who performs in and created the piece, stated that the original concept for A Little Potato and Hard to Peel came from
Phoenix Theatre Circle's Artistic Director
Steven Anderson.
"I would tell these stories about me growing up and playing sports or trying to get a girlfriend. Steven would tell me that I should put these anecdotes together into a performance piece. His words inspired me to write The Quest, an earlier version of the show. I am excited to remount this work for New York audiences. I think they'll find that the stories transcend someone just talking about their disability. This show is universal," said Harrell.
Mr. Harrell is originally from Georgia and has worked as an actor throughout the Southeast for the last decade. His regional credits include The New American Shakespeare Company, Push Push Theatre, The Jewish Theatre of the South, The Aurora Theatre, Theatre Gael, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, and Triad Stage. He recently graduated with his MFA in acting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
A little Potato and Hard to Peel is directed by
Jayd McCarty.
Mr. McCarty is the founder of The Studio/New York as well as one of the original members of Electric Pear Productions and currently serves as their creative producer. As an actor, he has appeared at
The Public Theatre, NYTW,
Second Stage, Cherry Lane, The
Barrow Group, The Lark, etc. He has performed regionally in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles and Texas.
