Outside a city stands an abandoned, ramshackle house. One day, two people appear from different directions. They each stand on opposite sides of the house, unaware of the other’s presence, and think to themselves “I can live here!” One of them is an old seaman who has finally decided to live out the rest of his days on land. The other is an orphaned little girl who has run away from the orphanage. The seaman limps in through the door, the girl crawls through a window. They meet in the kitchen. Neither of them knows quite what to do, but each of them thinks they got there first.
The Kitchen is the first performance by the Jo Strømgren Kompani especially for children, although Jo Strømgren himself has done a number of children’s shows, most recently Oslo losen (about a fictional comedy character and Oslo guide) at Oslo Nye Teater.
