Magic and acrobatics will combine with ballet and raw dance when The Norwegian National Ballet 2 and dancers from the Kingwings Crew breakdance group embark on their performance of one of the world’s most beautiful love stories, Romeo and Juliet.
In this performance, breakers and ballet dancers perform across from each other as the rival Montague and Capulet families. Against a backdrop of lasers, smoke and video effects, the dancers demonstrate the explosive power inherent in both breaking and ballet. The performance has been staged by choreographer Patrick King, and also features the singers Eli Kristin Hanssveen and Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy from the Norwegian National Opera.
Many audience members will remember the dancers from the hugely successful Kingwings vs. The Norwegian National Ballet in 2012 and 2014. Now the breakers have a date with The Norwegian National Ballet 2.
The Norwegian National Ballet 2 was launched in the spring of 2015, and consists of ten talented dancers aged between 17 and 23 from both Norway and abroad. The company danced its first performance in the spring of 2016, and will now take audiences to new heights with Romeo and Juliet. Ballet Director Ingrid Lorentzen wished to gather together some of today’s most talented young dancers at the Oslo Opera House. The company is a project that will run for several years, and which has been made possible through support from Talent Norge AS, Statkraft, the DNB Savings Bank Foundation and the Shipowner Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation.
Kingwings Crew was started in 2005, and consists of dancers from various parts of the world. The group gained national fame through the TV programme Norwegian Talents, as well as the TV Fundraiser and Stjernekamp programmes. They have won countless battles in both Norway and abroad. The group were the Norwegian Champions in breaking for 2009–2013, and were awarded the Oslo City Art Award in 2015.
