Nina Stemme wanted to live a normal life and began studying economics. She did not complete her studies – because she had such an exceptional singing voice. Parallel to her studies she took singing lessons, which resulted in solo performances that in turn led her to study opera. From lyrical Mozart roles she moved on to Puccini and Verdi, before she sang her first Wagner roles.
Today she is considered one of the leading Wagner sopranos. When La Scala in Milan marked the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, Nina’s was the voice they wanted for the occasion.
Accompanying her in this performance is pianist Matti Hirvonen, former professor at the Royal College of Music in London and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. In 2012 he began a professorship at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
