Georges Bizet's soulful Carmen is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world, but the story of the female seducer is also a ballet. The Norwegian National Ballet now has its own version, created by Liam Scarlett, who brought us the sparkling Firebird and beautiful Vespertine in autumn 2013. The young British choreographer has demonstrated a unique ability to beguile the audience, and the ballets he has previously created for the Norwegian National Ballet have been greeted with acclaim.
Nasjonalballetten's Carmen is his first evening-length ballet with a full orchestra, and will be a full-format, classic storytelling performance. Once again, Scarlett brings in set designer and costume designer Jon Bausor and lighting designer James Farncombe. Expect a dark, dramatic Carmen, with the free-spirited Carmen character who wants to break free from society and go her own way.
