The baroque masters, Johann Sebastian Bach in particular, meet the giants of modern ballet in Evening with the Masters of Baroque. Choreographers Balanchine, Forsythe, Kylián and Scarlett explore the point of intersection between dance and music, the role of the ballerina and the myth of Icarus.
Audiences will see William Forsythe's signature piece Steptext, for one female and three males. And we will again see Ji?í Kylián's achingly beautiful Wings of Wax. In Balanchine's Concerto Barocco and Liam Scarlett's new work, the Norwegian National Ballet will for the first time appear with the Baroque Soloists conducted by Bjarte Eike. The result is playful precision, challenging and masterful.
This year the Evening with the Masters is also shifting the delineation between stage and reality, with the performance commencing in the foyer. Here the audience can step into a world created by choreographer Patrick King, photo artist Erle Kyllingmark and composer Leif Jordansson. Inspired by the sculptor Rodin and his ability to shape life and movement, Intimate Distance is a tribute to the dancers of The Norwegian National Ballet and a prelude to the evening's performance. With Bach's music, moving images, sound backdrops and the Baroque Soloists, this evening promises to be a meeting of the masters – and dance masters – unlike anything seen before.
