In the Norwegian Opera and Ballet's new production of Die Fledermaus (the Bat), we find ourselves in the company of the nouveau riche of New York’s Upper East Manhattan, where the flow of champagne is as liberal as the morals.
On the way home from an evening of festivities a drunken Gabriel von Eisenstein leaves his good friend Dr. Falke lying on the street, heavily intoxicated and dressed in a bat costume. The revenge is sweet! Eisenstein is sent to jail as a result of a defamation suit, but without telling his wife Rosalinde, he decides to go first to a ball at the home of Prince Orlovsky. What he doesn’t know is that both his wife and the chambermaid Adele have also been invited. The pace accelerates, the champagne euphoria rises and the betrayals are lined up and waiting ...
