Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (BFO) has national orchestra status and is one of the world’s oldest orchestral institutions, dating all the way back to 1765. Edvard Grieg was closely affiliated with the orchestra, and was its Artistic Director during the period 1880–82. The orchestra has in the last seasons played with great success in concert halls in Europe and USA, and has earned international acclaim through several recordings. BFO celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2015.
To lead tonight's concert is the well known Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena, who between 2008 and 2013 was the BFO's first guest conductor. Mena has conducted leading orchestras in Europe and USA, and is currently chief conductor for The BBC Philharmonic.
