Norwegian hills will be alive again with THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Folketeatret in 2019

Scenekvelder, the Norwegian producers behind musicals such as "Les Misérables" and "The Phantom of the Opera" (as previously posted is set to open this September 2018) will mount a new version of "The Sound of Music" in 2019 on a grander scale than it has ever been done before in Norway, according to the producer, Karianne Jæger.

"We are so excited to bring you this musical. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest Broadway classics, and it goes without saying that Scenekvelder will give this great musical the opportunity to shine at Folkeeateret - Norway's only stage solely devoted to musical theatre,"

The Sound of Music is the heart-warming story about family ties and love based on the real life story of the von Trapp family from Salzburg in 1938 at the same time, as the threat of a strengthened Nazi regime in neighbouring Germany is getting nearer. Maria Rainer, who has been a novice in a nearby convent, becomes governess to widower captain Georg von Trapp's seven children.

Jæger continues "We want to make this scale of the musical bigger than it has ever been done before. In the leads, we have two of the country's best performers, Lena Kristin Ellingsen as Maria and Håvard Bakke as von Trapp. Lars Jacobsen will be part of out team and serve as director".

Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein's last collaboration created one of the most popular musicals in 1959 and won six Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actor in Musical and Best set design in 1960. The film version in 1965 is still considered the world's most popular movie-musical ever and the soundtrack has sold closer to 3 million copies.
"The Sound of Music Live!" was a television special that was broadcast by NBC in 2013. the production was a ratings success for NBC; with a total of 18.62 million live viewers.

The Sound of Music was last staged in Oslo in 2008 starring Maria Arredondo as Maria and Bjørn Skagestad as von Trapp. The most recent production was last year in the northern part of Norway at Halogaland teater in Trømsø.

The full cast for the production will be announced at a later date.
