Virginia Repertory Theatre sets the opening of I DO! I DO! for Friday, February 26 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road. The show runs through Sunday, April 3, 2016. This intimate musical follows two soul-mates as they navigate the joys and challenges of a 50-year marriage.
The original play from which the musical is adapted is The Fourposter by Dutch playwright Jan de Hartog. The Fourposter opened on Broadway in 1951 starring Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn and won the Tony Award for Best Play. The play was adapted into the musical I Do! I Do! in 1966 by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, the creators of The Fantasticks. The original Broadway production starred Mary Martin and Robert Preston, and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical, with Preston winning Best Actor.
Part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival, I Do! I Do! will host two talkbacks on March 13 and March 20 following the performances.
Under the direction of Virginia Rep's Artistic Director, Bruce Miller, the production highlights a charming and tuneful score and features two cast members who have been married for almost 29 years. "I am thrilled to work with Lauren and Larry in this nostalgic and humorous rediscovery of romance."
Miller's recent directing credits include As You Like It, Boleros for the Disenchanted, Legacy of Light, My Fair Lady, The Little Dog Laughed, The Crucible, The Lark, the Smoke on the Mountain trilogy, On Golden Pond, Annie Get Your Gun, Anything Goes, A Lug Nuts Christmas, and Tartuffe.
Lauren-Leinhaas-Cook and Larry Cook have shared the stage many times, most recently in Equus and In the Next Room produced by Cadence Theatre and Virginia Rep and The Music Man at the November Theatre.

Now the heritages of Barksdale Theatre (founded in 1953) and Theatre IV (founded in 1975) live on in their new form, as Central Virginia's leading professional theater company. Virginia Rep presents national caliber productions of the great dramas, comedies, and musicals as well as classics, contemporary works, and world premieres, always seeking to demonstrate the unique power of theater to engage, enthrall, educate, and inspire. Productions are staged at four distinct venues: the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre and Theatre Gym at the downtown Virginia Rep Center, Virginia Rep's Children's Theatre located at Willow Lawn, and at Hanover Tavern, home to Virginia Rep's Barksdale Season.
