Virginia Rep opens the Southern Gothic comedy Crimes of the Heart on Friday, July 20 at the Hanover Tavern, the final show of the 2017-18 Hanover Season. Written by Beth Henley, this American theatre classic follows the Magrath sisters as they reunite to escape their past in the hopes of a better tomorrow, however, their present reality offers hilarious and troublesome obstacles. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes a touching and irreverent look at sisterhood and what it means to find yourself amidst despair. The show runs through August 26, 2018 at the Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover, Virginia 23069.

Director and Richmond theatre veteran Steve Perigard returns to the Tavern stage after directing past Virginia Rep summer productions of Da and Brighton Beach Memoirs. He also served as the former Artistic Director of Barksdale Theatre/Theatre IV. Perigard's work has been seen on stages across the country, including Virginia Rep, Cadence Theatre, Quill Theatre, Company of Fools, Firehouse Theatre, TheatreVirginia, SPARC, TheatreVCU, Randolph Macon College and The Collegiate School, where he currently serves as the upper school Director of Theatre.

For this tragicomedy, Perigard has assembled a talented cast of theatre artists. Maggie Roop, a Richmond Theatre Critic Circle Award-winning actress and nominated director, will be portraying the eldest of the Magrath sisters, Lenny. Other Virginia Rep credits include The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Olympus on My Mind. Irene Kuykendall, who has also garnered both acting and directing (Assistant Director, Shakespeare in Love) credits, has been cast as the middle sister, Meg. Playing the youngest, Babe, will be Lexi Langs, who was last seen on a Virginia Rep stage in 2007 as part of the company of The Member of the Wedding.

Set Design is by Terrie Powers (Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End, Da), Costume Design is by Sue Griffin (River Ditty, Mary Poppins), and Lighting Design is by Virginia Rep newcomer Zachary Townsend.
