Los Angeles-based female vocal trio KING will make their Virginia Arts Festival debut at the Attucks Theatre on Friday, April 14. Consisting of twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother and their friend Anita Bias, KING has caused a flurry of crushes among music writers and critics, drawing glowing praise from such disparate journalistic sources as The New York Times, The Guardian (London), Rolling Stone, Billboard, GQ, and Noisey, the music channel of Vice.
The trio was "discovered" by the late funk/R&B/rock innovator Prince, who was so enamored of their sound that he asked KING to open for his concerts. Their 2011 EP (extended-play recording) was met with rapturous reviews by critics and recognized as groundbreaking by such established artists as Questlove and Erykah Badu. Their first full-length album, We Are KING, has been nominated for a 2017 Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Rolling Stone named KING to its "10 Artists You Need to Know" list for 2016, and We Are KING has made other critics top-choice lists including Time magazine and Noisey.
Admired for their rich harmonies and genre-defying blend of styles, KING creates music that calls upon the traditions of R&B, neo-soul and jazz, while avoiding any single label. The trio write, sing, produce and record their own music.
Tickets for the Virginia Arts Festival's presentation of KING are $20-$35 and may be purchased online at www.vafest.org, by phone at 757-282-2822 or by visiting the Virginia Arts Festival box office located at 440 Bank Street in Norfolk between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
