The theatre camp partnership between Virginia Stage Company and the Governor's School for the Arts returns this summer with exciting advances! Campers will have the opportunity to work with professional theater artists and engage in theatrical experiences that nurture their imaginations. A total of six two-week sessions are split between two age groups - ages 9-12 and ages 13-17 - with the first session beginning June 18. Camp activities include creative writing, character study, improvisation, and movement, with a culminating production written and performed by campers on the Wells Theatre stage.
This year's camp experiences explore three different themes from which to choose from:
1) Shel Silverstein: Poetry, Pictures, and Performance
2) Greek Mythology: Fates, Gods, And Legends
3) Grimm's Fairytales: Fantasy, Magic, And Wonder
"In the past, all sessions focused on the same theme - Shel Silverstein," said Emel Ertugrul, Virginia Stage Company's Education Coordinator. "This year, we are offering three different themes so each student can choose their own experience." Campers can register for one, or all three!
The theatre camp staff features two of Virginia Stage Company's professional artists - Ryan Clemens, Lead Theatre Artist; and Jeni Schaefer, Resident Costume Designer & Costume Shop Manager. The summer camp also welcomes Laura Agudelo, who is the recipient of the 2018 High School Teacher of the Year Award for her work as a theatre teacher at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake.
Each session runs Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. for two consecutive weeks. The session concludes with a culminating evening performance at 5:30 p.m. at the Wells Theatre on the last Friday of camp. Registration fee for each session is $275 per student, which includes a camp t-shirt. Adjusted fees are available based on financial need and the availability of VSC scholarship funds.
